New Jazz 2004

The 2004 New Jazz programme was both adventurous and successful. Once again the event celebrated the depth of musical partenerships within the city and presented new and emerging talent.

Our main sponsor has since moved their operations from Queen Square and funding the event has proved difficult. We therefore regret to announce that there will be no event in 2005. This does however provide us with an opportunity to review the event and plan for 2006.

We intend to attract new sponsors, seek grant funding and develop closer links with the immediate Queen Square community. We will engage with musicians, promoters and venue owners to ensure the identity and programming of the event continues to evolve. We will launch a CD in 2006 and work with Destination Bristol to develop and market the event more ambitiously.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the event, and of course, to everyone who came along. Please visit this site to catch up on any developments and news of other Queen Square events.

The 2004 lineup included Joe Finch, Robado, The Blessing, Denys Baptiste, Katie Elliot, Loopforce, CCQ, King Cotton, Andy Hague, James Morton's Instrumentalists, Kevin Figes Quartet, Mivart Collective, Jim Blomfield, Trio Modu, The Organelles, Spiro / Organelles collaboration, Ruth Hammond, Limbo, The Big Fish, Mankala, Hassan Erraji, Ade's Band, Seckou Keita and several other bands.

“The Programme will feature the very best of Bristol’s emerging New Jazz talent. The performances will span a broad range of original music in the New Jazz genre featuring influences from World Music to traditional Jazz Improvisation. Bristol has a proud tradition of original music making, combining the many influences from its significance as a global trading centre and home to many different communities. There are many talented musicians and composers based in Bristol and this series will celebrate a selection of the very best.”  Chris Powell, Programme Coordinator
